Using quizzes in English to develop students’ grammar skills
Abstract. This article is devoted to the problem of developing students’ grammatical skills at English lessons. Due to the fact that grammar is a structure of language and transforms it into speech, this aspect of language learning is the most important and has been a topic of intense debates for many years. The author has considered the main difficulty of English grammar as «Verb tenses».
The verb tenses most commonly used in speaking and writing were considered in this article: Present Simple, Present Continuous, Past Simple, Past Continuous, Present Perfect. Cases of using were described, charts of different types of sentences (affirmative, negative and interrogative) were made up; examples were given, the marker words of each verb tense were indicated. The author also compared some verb tenses in the form of a table. As a result, theoretical reminders of verb tenses were created. In addition, the questions for checking based on theoretical material were compiled. The author of the article shares the ideas of what consistent actions of a teacher should be in order to the formation of grammar skills on the topic «Verb tenses» will become effective for students. This article suggests using the quiz as an optimal format in order to test and consolidate knowledge of grammar on a specific topic. For this purpose, the LearningApps service was studied and eight grammar quizzes were created on its basis. The article also describes the experience of introducing grammar quizzes into all 5th grades of a rural school.
