Methodology of legal issues teaching in a school social studies course

Abstract. This article discusses changing approaches to the issue of teaching law in the Russian education system. The author proposes to integrate legal material into all topics of the Social Studies course in primary and secondary schools. This innovation will help in the task of overcoming the fragmented worldview that schoolchildren develop as a result of fragmented teaching of school subjects. The school social studies course should develop the socially adaptive capabilities of the individual, respect for human rights and freedoms as the highest value, thereby preparing students to perform the functions of an active member of a civil society. The article offers examples of the integration of legal norms into a social science course, considering the inclusion of a legal component into the subject content from 9th grade to 11th one. The use of gaming techniques and a work with legal sources in social studies lessons is analyzed. The application of the method of analyzing a legal case in social studies lessons is examined in detail. The advantages of this methodology are emphasized, such as the ability to display a direct connection between the rules of law and all aspects of society, preparing students to fulfill the duties of a citizen, and familiarity with the rules of interpersonal relations in a multi­religious society.
