Techniques for working with statistical materials in the process of learning Geography at school

Abstract. The article considers adapted techniques of the statistical method aimed at studying the quantitative patterns of socio-economic and natural-ecological phenomena, during Geography studying at school and in the preparation for the independent assessment of the quality of education. The article offers methodical techniques of work with statistical materials: information, logical, research, communicative, and practical nature for the integration of components of the content of geographical education with general skills; recommendations for the implementation of the method of statistical study of geographical objects and phenomena of certain territories. The statistical processing is illustrated by an exact example of studying Geography in Secondary school. The interval distribution series is constructed and analyzed within testing, introducing and training the course according to the results of observations. This process is carried out in several stages: compilation of the table of observable values of the examined feature, determination of the optimal number of intervals and their width, determination of the boundaries of intervals, calculation of frequency for each interval, histogram construction, and evaluation of the average values such as average sample value, mode, and median. The technique of statistical study is presented by works with statistical materials at the secondary and senior secondary levels of school education, demonstrating the activity approach and meta-subject component in the development and control of knowledge of Geography at school.
