Usefulness of the diachronic approach in the words division into morphemes in training the roots spelling in the Russian language

Abstract. The article deals with an important school didactics problem: learning the words spelling with verifiable vowels in the root. It substantiates the usefulness of the diachronic approach in the words division into morphemes in teaching Russian language to school children. This approach provides conscious and lasting acquisition of knowledge on spelling of the groups of word families that have lost, due to de-etymologization, a clear link to their historical roots. Drawing attention to the original meaning of such roots enable pupils to accumulate the required information helping to select the proper verification words and, thus, to solve promptly emerging orthographical problems. The author, having analyzed certain mistakes frequently found in notebooks of junior and senior pupils and according to the long-term experience of work on the elimination of such mistakes has come to the conclusion revealing the historical roots and etymology of difficult-to-spell words influence on the spelling literacy of pupils who learn the Russian language.
