Pedagogical prompting — a new professional skill for teachers

Abstract

This article explores the integration of generative artificial intelligence systems into modern comprehensive schools. The topic’s relevance stems from the rapid development of digital technologies and their penetration into all spheres of life, particularly education as a priority area of development for the Russian state. The article describes how the implementation of neural network models is changing the traditional set of pedagogical competencies. Artificial intelligence models are no longer simply an auxiliary tool for teachers, but rather a key player in the educational process — assisting in the preparation of teaching materials, individualization of learning, and prompt feedback for students.
The author analyzes the transformation of teachers’ professional skills in the context of the digitalization of society as a whole, when traditional teacher competencies are complemented by the ability to effectively interact with neural network models. The article explores key concepts related to artificial intelligence technologies, neural networks, and large-scale language models. This article offers an accessible explanation of terms important for educators: what a generative model is, how neural networks are structured, what the specifics of large language models is, and what their main capabilities and limitations are in an educational context.
The article places particular emphasis on developing the skill of pedagogical prompting as the ability to construct effective queries to obtain relevant educational outcomes. Based on an analysis of typical mistakes and effective examples, the article describes the basic rules for constructing prompts, including setting a goal, defining the role of the model, and considering context and constraints. Typical prompt templates are provided for various pedagogical tasks — from lesson plan development to creating differentiated assignments and generating test variants.
