ARCS model as a means of study motivation development in the e-Learning system

Abstract. In recent years during the Pandemic COVID-19 the e-Learning has dominated the world educational system. The issue of students’ motivation formation and support during distance learning has renewed the focus on the mass implementation of electronic format of educational process organization. The article touches upon and disproves a popular hypothesis of foreign researchers that e-Learning provides a high level of online learning participants’ motivation (in particular the self-motivation). As an effective complex of methods and approaches for improving student’s motivation and increasing the effectiveness of distance learning the authors of the article recommend to use the well-known motivation model ARCS created by the American researcher John Keller. The authors examine four key principles of the ARCS model, which are A — attention, R — relevance, C — confidence, and S — satisfaction. The article also provides practical examples of using this motivation model during English language classes for adults. It is worth emphasizing the motivation model could be successfully applied in all educational program.
