Advantages of using the Dogme ELT method in modern foreign language teaching
Abstract. The article examines the theoretical and methodological foundations for the implementation of the Dogme ELT approach in the modern system of foreign language teaching. The aim of the research is to analyze the Dogme ELT approach as a relevant and actual teaching approach as well as to identify its practical benefits while integrating into the educational process of university, in particular, at Yugra State University. Special attention is paid to identifying contradictions between school and university-level language training and also analyzing the mismatch between educational aims and methods at different educational levels. The specific features of the grammar-translation method, which remains widespread in general education, are clarified, and its limitations are substantiated in the context of developing students’ communicative competence. The distinctive characteristics of the Dogme ELT method — such as flexibility, minimal reliance on textbooks, focus on spontaneous speech, and use of learners’ linguistic experience — are presented as a relevant alternative to the traditional approach. The article also presents the results of students’ survey conducted at Yugra State University, demonstrating the high motivational and practice-oriented effectiveness of Dogme ELT. Emphasis is placed on the pedagogical value of integrating elements of this method into the university curricula in order to intensify students’ speaking activity, increase learner autonomy, and stimulate sustained interest in language acquisition as a means of intercultural communication. The results described in the research can be of interest to teachers, curriculum developers, postgraduates, master’s students as well as academic coordinators who aim to improve the quality of foreign language teaching.
